An Inspiring Training with Eco-center Operators in Eeyou Istchee Territory

A joint project with Eeyou First Nations of Mistissini, Wemindji, Chisasibi, Nemaska, and the Cree Nation Government

On November 4 and 5, 2025, our waste management team traveled to Eeyou Istchee territory to deliver the “Ecocentre Management and Operations” training. Fifteen participants from the First Nations of Mistissini, Wemindji, Chisasibi, Nemaska, and the Cree Nation Government came together to exchange, learn, and build common solutions.

Practical and Comprehensive Training

This training aims to prepare current and future ecocentre operators to effectively manage their facility and handle the various materials brought in by the community. Over the two days, we covered several essential topics:

  • Sorting and managing different materials received at the ecocentre
  • Occupational health and safety for operators
  • Best practices in waste management
  • Specific challenges of ecocentres in remote areas

We also visited the Mistissini ecocentre. This field visit allowed us to concretely address the main challenge faced by ecocentres: removing accumulated materials. Participants also discovered equipment and facilities, including the composting platform, the machine for grinding wood and asphalt, and the machine for making cardboard bales.

Exchanges That Build Connections

Beyond the training content, what particularly struck us was the presence of representatives from several communities facing the same challenges in terms of material transportation, operational funding, and more. This dynamic fostered rich discussions and the emergence of common solutions, while building valuable connections.
This is exactly the type of exchange that makes our training powerful: creating safe spaces where First Nations can learn from one another.

A Shared Commitment to Improving Ecocentres

The enthusiasm and motivation of the participants deeply inspired us. Their commitment to improving their ecocentres demonstrates the importance of these infrastructures for the environmental management of communities.

We warmly thank all participants for their involvement and for enriching the discussions with their experiences and questions. We are proud to have contributed to developing their skills and are committed to continuing to support them in their efforts to the best of our ability.
