First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Research Protocol

In 2014, the AFNQL published a research protocol aimed at First Nations and regional First Nations organizations. This protocol is a collective tool for community leaders and managers who are invited to participate in research projects or who wish to carry out their own research. Its purpose is to regulate and supervise research activities carried out on First Nations land.

The protocol is also aimed at the scientific community, which is invited to take this document into account in the same way as protocols, guidelines and other documents in use in research institutions. Considering that many requests are addressed to First Nations, it was essential that a First Nations tool be available to set guidelines for managing these requests.

With this document, the AFNQL reaffirms the right of First Nations to claim full governance of information concerning them, as well as the right to be fully involved in all research projects that affect them in any way, whatever the discipline.

The purpose of this protocol is to support First Nations and the scientific community in their respective and shared approaches to research, as well as the development and dissemination of knowledge, in a spirit of respect and partnership.
