Working with Opitciwan First Nation to implement recycling services

A joint project with the Opitciwan First Nation

Opitciwan First Nation approached us in 2020 for help creating a recycling program. We supported the public works team from the feasibility study through to commissioning, including all of the decisions involved in planning the program, selecting equipment and sorting out logistics and operations.

Recycling officially started in Opitciwan in 2022. Our team was there in October to celebrate in style. Together with the public works team, we organized a community dinner and distributed blue bins and awareness materials to the community.

A successful and inspiring project for Opitciwan First Nation

Several tonnes of recyclables have been sent to the Roberval recycling centre since the start of the community’s recycling program. Community participation has been so strong that we helped the public works team purchase additional equipment to meet the demand and divert more recyclables from landfills.

Alongside the recycling program, the Opitciwan Atikamekw Council had us conduct a feasibility study for the creation of an organic waste collection system as part of its food sovereignty project, which aims to foster local agri-food initiatives.
