We’ve released our report on First Nations–Led Protected Areas!

February 19 2024

It is with great enthusiasm that we publish today our report “Towards True First Nations-Led Protected Areas.”

This document is the result of close collaboration with participating First Nations. We met with 21 communities and organizations from 10 Nations in Quebec. We organized the event “Towards a Network of Indigenous Protected Areas,” which brought together more than 90 participants, and we held four working groups on ALPAs.

Based on the reflections of First Nations, we are making clear recommendations to the Ministry of the Environment, Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks (MELCCFP) regarding the definition of the new ALPA status and how its guide should be developed. In particular, we address the recognition of rights, governance, Indigenous management, and the essential criteria to be considered in ALPAs.

We thank the First Nations for their trust and their central contribution to this work.

We appreciate your openness, flexibility, and dedication to these important issues. Regardless of the outcome of the provincial process that will follow, our team believes that the exercise conducted by the FNQLSDI has led to meaningful conversations, both within the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke and with other partners. We thank you for holding this space over the past year.

Ross MontourRatsénhaienhs (Chief) - Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke

This report is meant to further the MELCCFP’s efforts to define the ALPA status and guide in close collaboration with First Nations in Quebec.
