Helping First Nations protect woodland and mountain caribou
We work closely with conservation experts and First Nations on the issue of woodland and mountain caribou. That includes organizing consultation meetings with First Nations experts and supporting any political action taken by the Assembly of First Nations Quebec and Labrador (AFNQL) to protect the caribou.
In preparation for the government of Quebec’s independent commission on caribou, we held two consultation meetings with First Nations experts—on February 23 and March 24, 2022—and created an action plan for the AFNQL. In those meetings, we outlined various actions the AFNQL could take in the media, the legislature and the courts to protect woodland and mountain caribou.
Taking a stand for woodland caribou
On September 7, 2022, we held a workshop to learn about the actions taken by First Nations to protect the caribou and share our future actions and those of the AFNQL. We also wrote official letters with the AFNQL to Minister Steven Guilbeault and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and submitted a brief to the independent commission.
